Your First Cruise, Step by Step
- Choose the style before the ship. A 5,000-guest resort ship and a 100-guest expedition ship are different vacations. See ship types.
- Pick a cabin. Inside, ocean-view, balcony or suite. A balcony is worth it on scenic itineraries such as Alaska or Norway.
- Check documents. A passport valid at least six months beyond your trip is the safe choice, even when not strictly required.
- Buy travel insurance soon after you book.
- Arrive the day before if you fly. The ship will not wait.
- Complete online check-in, choose an arrival time, and download the cruise line’s app.
Life Onboard
- Sea days are for the pool, spa, talks, shows and long lunches.
- Port days: be back onboard by the “all aboard” time printed in the daily program, usually 30–60 minutes before departure.
- Tender ports: the ship anchors and small boats take you ashore.
- Dining: main dining rooms and the buffet are included; specialty restaurants usually cost extra.
- Last night: put your bags out by the requested time, or carry them off yourself for an early exit.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens on embarkation day?
You arrive at the terminal at your assigned time, drop your checked bags with the porters, pass security, show your documents and board. Your cabin is usually ready by early afternoon; bags arrive by evening. Keep medication, documents and swimwear in a carry-on.
What is the muster drill?
A mandatory safety briefing before or soon after departure. Many lines now use an e-muster: you watch a safety video on your phone or cabin TV, then check in at your assembly station.
How do I pay onboard?
Cruises are cashless. Your cruise card or app is linked to a credit card and records every purchase; you settle the account at the end.
Will I get seasick?
Most people don’t on large, stabilized ships in calm seas. If you are prone to it, choose a lower, midship cabin and bring a remedy recommended by your doctor.
